This Looks Trendy, But Doesn't Suit Me. Why?

This is a common question we all face.

You carefully buy clothes, piece by piece considering the colors and style. And after all that effort, you try your new outfit and realize you look nothing like the guy in the picture.

The chances are, you overlooked a small but crucial factor – body type. You probably don't have the same body type as the guy in the photo. The result? What works for him doesn't work for you.

This blog with cover - how to avoid this mistake by teaching you how to dress for your body type in this series of styling tips for men based on body shape.

The first one I would love to talk about is the Oval Shape. You can know about your body shape and what suits you at Poisedpresence.

Every body shape is unique and can look good with the right styling. It's all about emphasizing and de-emphasizing.

Features of Oval shape:

  • Upper shoulders and arms are stronger.

  • Round belly, where the center of the torso is wider than the shoulders and hips

  • Legs are slimmer in comparison to the upper half

  • Fuller face and short neck

Oval-shaped men should look for clothes that slim and frame the body effectively.

Trousers -
  • Regular fit trousers, not too tight at the waist.

  • Fabrics that falls and do not crease much is a good idea.

  • Since the belly area needs to be de-emphasized, it's good to wear darker top and lighter lower, or same color both.

Shirts & T-shirts -

  • V neckline, cowl neck, round neck, polo t-shirts are your go to. Avoid high necklines or turtle necklines.

  • Avoid tight and loose shirts or t-shirts. Just make the clothes flow over the body.

  • Avoid too loose sleeves as that will make you look boxy.

  • Small prints or vertical lines, anything that adds length.

  • Small or medium spread collars, not too wide collars.

  • Dark-colored shirts and t-shirts.

  • Prints that camouflage with your belly area as that will make it look slimmer.

  • If you’re wearing a shirt that’s a little tight in the belly those vertical stripes will stretch unflatteringly. So choose it wisely.

Jackets - Wear jackets and blazers to give structure and edge to your rounded body shape.

  • Single-breasted coats or jackets with very slight tapering.

  • Stick to dark colors and jackets that fall below the waist to mid-thigh for an elongated look.

  • Dark color two-button suits are modern, fashionable, and won't highlight your middle.

  • A sharp taper at the waist can be difficult to button and stretch over the stomach. Instead, opt for a slight inward bend around the buttons.

  • Avoid blazers with too heavy shoulder pads.

Accessories -

  • If you are wearing a tie, wear a long tie enough close to the belt, and do not wear too contrasting tie with the shirt as it will highlight the belly area.

  • Wear suspenders whenever you can as that will hold the trousers front out neatly.

  • You can add slight heel to your shoes.

  • Dark color medium width belts are good to go, as lighter and broader ones will draw attention to your belly.

  • Stoles, scarves, shawls - You can also add vertical length by carrying a stole or scarf. That will also de-emphasize the front-heavy area.

Colors -

  • Dark colors are your best friends.

  • Low contrast colors, ideally monochromatic colors (i.e same top and bottom is best in your case), and avoid high contrast combinations as that will cut you in halves.

  • In layering you can wear light and dark to create the illusion of vertical line. Light inside, dark outside.
